Satellite Radio among the Hanukkah Programming choices this year

SiriusXM Radio will be airing Radio Hanukkah with nonstop Hanukkah music from December 7-19th on Sirius 26 and XM 88.The full schedule of events is here.

Holiday Concert Season is Upon Us

Once again, it's the season for station-sponsored holiday concerts:

December 5th:

KIIS-FM (102.7): Jingle Ball, held at the Nokia Theatre LA Live. Performers include: Taylor Swift, Keri Hilson, Fabolous, the Ting Tings, 3OH!3, LMFAO, Jay Sean, Jason Derulo and more.

December 6th:

KKGO-FM(105.1) Go Country 105 Accoustic Holiday Concert, held at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center.

December 9th-10th:

KROQ-FM (106.7): Almost Accoustic Christmas, held two nights(December 9 and 10) at the Gibson Amplitheatre in Universal City.

Night one features 30 Seconds to Mars, Saosin, Wolfmother, Papa Roach, +44, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Incubus, AFI, Foo Fighters.

Night two includes Gnarls Barkley, Evanescence, She Wants Revenge, Angels and Airwaves, The Killers, Snow Patrol, Beck, Foo Fighters, The Raconteurs, Panic! At The Disco.

Ruth Seymour resigns as GM of KCRW-FM

After 32 years managing KCRW-FM (89.9), Ruth Seymour announced her resignation on November 18th. Her resignation will be effective at the end of February 2010.

Seymour has presided over the station from its humble roots in a middle school to its current status as a public radio superstation, simulcasting over several public radio frequencies in Southern California, and an expansive Internet reach, including streaming broadcast channels and iPhone applications.

KCRW's licenseholder, Santa Monica College is now in the process of naming Seymour's successor.

Martha Stewart Thanksgiving Hotline

Over on satellite radio, Martha Stewart Living Radio will be hosting their annual Thanksgiving Hotline. From November 23-25, Emeril Lagasse, Martha Stewart, Nigella Lawson and other famous chefs will share their Turkey Day tips. (SIRIUS Channel 112, XM Ch. 157)

Henry Rollins back on Indie 103.1
After a hiatus for touring, Henry Rollins is back on Indie 103.1 FM with his free-form show "Harmony in my Head." Rollins broadcasts live from the studio Tuesday nights from 8pm to 10pm, starting December 27.

Howard Stern is now off the air, to re-emerge on Sirius Satellite Radio on Jan 9. Adam Carolla starts his show on KLSX-FM on January 3rd, in Howard's 5AM-10AM slot. A far cry from his initial "Mr. Bircham" bits on the Kevin and Bean show....

World Class Rock returns -- as a podcast

KCSA and Channel 103.1 veteran Nicole Sandler has just launched a podcast site featuring live performances and interviews from artists she has interviewed over the years broadcasting on Los Angeles only triple-A stations. The first two offerings on her RadioOrNot.com site are Dave Matthews and Ray Davies.

For those of us who miss triple-A (Album Adult Alternative) radio in LA, this is a welcome addition to the podcast universe. From the note on her site, she has a lot of tapes full of interviews and performances, and is just warming up. Check out the site, it's well worth supporting a podcast that isn't coming from two guys in their basement discussing their comic book collections.

"JILL-fm" and "Latino 96.3" make their debuts.

As reported by LARadio.com, KXOL, owned by Spanish Broadcast System, has become “Latino 96.3." The new format will highlight a mix of upbeat music styles, including Reggaeton and Spanish hip-hop. Featured artists of the new station will include Reggaeton artists Daddy Yankee, Ivy Queen, Don Omar, and Tego Calderon as well as Spanish hip-hop artists such as Pitbull and local Los Angeles groups Ozomatli, Crooked Stilo and Akwid.

Last week also saw the introduction of "JILL-fm". “Lite 92.7/fm” changed format Friday morning and is calling itself JILL/fm. “Lite 92.7/fm” is part of a three-station simulcast of three Class A Amaturo Group of stations - KELT-Adelanto, KLIT-Fountain Valley, and KMLT-Thousand Oaks. The JILL-fm format is a mix of soft Adult Contemporary hits, with no DJs.

Ironically, while this new format is another attempt to emulate an iPod in Shuffle mode, Steve Jobs announced that the next version of the iTunes music player program will include support for download of podcasts, bringing a wide range of DJ shows and news programs to portable players on demand.

Memorial Day weekend programming

KLOS-FM (95.5) The Memorial 500 Countdown shifts into high gear starting Friday morning at 10AM and runs all the way through the Memorial Day Weekend.

KROQ-FM (106.7) is presenting a '90s Flashback Weekend, giving passes to the MTV Movie Awards, and running a promotion giving away movie passes to big summer movies.

On KCRW-FM (89.9) Former senator and honored war veteran Max Cleland hosts Lest We Forget, an hour of personal memoirs shared by our nation's veterans.

More personality shifts with Mancow, Price

Former Arrow 93 personality Mary Price is moving from classic rock, to classical, period, as she moves to K-Mozart (KMZT 105.1 FM)

And KLAC, "XTRA Sports 570" continues the shift to talk. They have Phil Hendrie in the evenings, and starting May 23, controversial Chicago jock Mancow Muller takes on morning drive.

Stephanie Miller back in town, on KTLK

Stephanie Miller is joining the new Progressive Talk station, KTLK, in morning drive. Joining a station lineup that includes Air America hosts Al Franken, Ed Schultz, and Janeane Garafalo, the former KFI and KABC talker promises to liven things up. Stephanie begins May 2, replacing the Morning Sedition.

K-SURF goes for the laughs

Starting Friday, April 8, KSURF (1260 AM) will start broadcasting All-Comedy Radio seven nights a week from 8pm till 5am, switching back to oldies during the day. K-SURF's sister station 540 AM will continue to play Oldies 24/7.

Jack ratings off

KCBS-FM 93.1 is no longer Arrow93, but is now Jack-FM, a spinoff of a new format featured in a lot of cities, particularly in New York, Houston, and cities in Canada.

The "playing what we want" concept, originated by New York programmer "Cadillac Jack" Garrett, is just an expansion of the usual classic rock playlist to about 1200 songs from 4 decades. Kevin Weatherby, mastermind behind KROQ-FM back when it was still good, compares the format to listening to an iPod in shuttle mode. (Except most of us would probably not load "Funkytown" on our iPods...)

Anyway, the ratings impact of the new format has been immediate, with KCBS losing over 100,000 daily listeners, according to one between-book ratings service. People continue to hotly discuss the new format on bulletin boards and in emails, though, which is something nobody could say about Arrow FM for the last several years.

And their web site still sucks : http://www.931jackfm.com/. If you want to know more about Jack-FM, however, you can check out the web sites from other stations running the format (and some of them have live streams). Try http://www.jackontheweb.com, or http://www.jackfm.com, or the original http://www.jack.fm for some examples. Note that many of the stations playing the format have brought back DJs, considered by many a must if you are going to play such a wide playlist.

The new format certainly makes things easier for us at Radiowatch, with no highlights, personalities, or special programs, we won't have a lot of work to do... Good for us, huh?

We don't know Jack

As of March 18, KCBS-FM 93.1 is no longer Arrow93, but is now something called Jack-FM.

We've seen this process a million times, with radio stations pulling the rug out from under one format and launching another, but it sure would be nice if they'd give a little more information on the Web site. Being away from a radio to check out the new format, for all I know it's Indonesian translations of polka music played backwards over a gravel road...

C'mon, Infinity! You could answer a lot of these questions by putting a 'listen now' link on your temporary web page... Is that too much to ask?

Indie 103.1 in trouble

Due to a new interpretation of the FCC rules which considers the Clear Channel/Entervision ad sales agreement equivalent to Clear Channel owning the station and a violation of the 8-station limit per market, Clear Channel is being forced to end the agreement on April 1, 2005. The arrangement had Clear Channel selling ads for the station alongside its own stations, providing ad revenue none of the previous formats had been able to attain.

What this means for the station, a highly-acclaimed station featuring disc jockeys such as the Sex Pistols' Steve Jones and fiery poet/singer Henry Rollins, has not been announced. There is speculation that Entervision, one of the nation's largest Spanish-language station owners, will take the station back to Spanish language programming.

In the meantime, KCRW-FM has announced that they will begin podcasting their programming. The station will make its programs available for downloading into mobile MP3 devices.

KCRW subscription drive in progress

KCRW-FM (89.9) is holding its winter subscription drive through Feb. 7. But of course, you probably know that if you are listening, as the voice of Ruth Seymour continually prods you to pony up the cash...

For Jazz fans, it's not too late to pledge to KKJZ-FM (88.1). Their January subscription drive came up short of their goals, so they are still looking for funds to continue their signal boosting project and keep their programming coming. You can donate online to this great station, whose programming is a welcome respite from the NPR shows simulcast across LA public radio.

LA stations to cover Iraq local voting

Friday, January 28, is the first of three days when Iraqi citizens living abroad can participate in their country's first truly democratic elections -- and three Salem Communications stations will have the opportunity to broadcast live from the El Toro Facility in Irvine, Calif., one of only seven Iraq Out-of-Country voting locations in the United States.

"We're very pleased to be permitted to broadcast from El Toro," said Terry Fahy, Vice President/General Manager, Salem Los Angeles. "Each of the three hosts that will be participating in this historic event has a distinct perspective, and we look forward to sharing their first-hand experience with the listening audience."

"The Larry Marino Show," heard on 590 KTIE-AM, The Talk of The Inland Empire, will broadcast 12 Noon - 1:00 p.m. The nationally syndicated "Hugh Hewitt Show," heard in Southern California on News Talk 870 KRLA-AM, will broadcast 3:00 - 6:00 p.m., and 99.5 KKLA-FM's "The Frank Pastore Show" will broadcast 4:00 - 7:00 p.m.

KROQ Relief Auction

KROQ-FM (106.7)is holding an online auction to benefit Tsunami victims. Items on the block include a day's live broadcast from your house, backstage passes to next year's Accoustic Christmas, a signed guitar from Audioslave's Tom Morello, and a trip for 2 to see Interpol in Paris. If those are too pricey for you, they are also giving out key chains and t-shirts if you make a donation online.

Auction ends Friday, Jan 14th at 6pm, each item has its own end time. KROQ will be holding a live event at Hollywood and Highland from 2pn-6pm with members of Linkin Park, Hoobastank, and Tom Morello to talley up auction results.

Pee Wee speaks!

On the occasion of the DVD release of “Pee Wee’s Playhouse,” PEE WEE HERMAN -- who hasn’t been heard from since 1991 -- joins Elvis Mitchell, host of the nationally syndicated public radio program, The Treatment for a special broadcast, Monday, December 6th, 2:30 to 3 pm on 89.9 KCRW and KCRW.com. Elvis also speaks to Pee Wee’s alter ego, PAUL REUBENS, the creator and producer of “Pee Wee’s Playhouse.”

It's not too late

It's not too late to get tickets for KROQ-FM's Almost Accoustic Christmas - December 11 and 12 at Universal Amplitheatre. Though tickets sold out within minutes of going on sale, the station is planning to hold an online post-sale Friday at 4 pm for members of their Street Team online club. Details for this sale and other ways to score tickets are detailed in the email they sent out. Not sure if it's too late to register now and get this information, but it is free to register to join the Street Team.

Get in Line for holiday radio concerts

KSYR-FM (98.7) holds its 5th annual Not So Silent Night on December 6th at the Arrowhead Pond. Performers include Duran Duran, Los Lonely Boys, Alanis Morrisette, and John Mayer. Tickets go on sale Saturday Nov 8th.

KKBT-FM (100.3) also puts tickets on sale Saturday Nov. 8th for the Holiday Cooldoon at the Universal Amplitheatre on Dec 15th.

No announcements have been made yet regarding KROQ's Almost Accoustic Christmas for this year; an announcement regarding ticket availability will be sent Nov. 17 to members of the online Street Team club.

Election Night Coverage

The airwaves promise to hum on both sides of the political and broadcast spectrum Tuesday night. Among the stations with full coverage:

KABC (AM 790): Beginning at 6:00PM on November 2, Al Rantel will anchor KABC's local coverage with special in-studio guests, Bill Simon and Gray Davis as election results are announced. National coverage will be anchored by ABC Network News correspondents Gil Gross and Sam Donaldson, as well as special live coverage from more than twelve key states across the nation.

KCRW (89.9 FM): With National Public Radio, Warren Olney’s To the Point and Which Way, L.A.? team of national and local producers, The California Report and other exclusive sources for breaking news and analysis, KCRW’s Election Day coverage will begin at 1 pm.

1 pm - To the Point (national overview) with host Warren Olney
2 pm - Which Way, LA? (state and local overview) with host Warren Olney
3 pm - NPR’s All Things Considered
5 pm - NPR’s Special Election Coverage8 pm to midnight - Ten-minute reports at :20 and :50 minutes past the hour (California Report/state returns)

NPR election coverage will also be broadcast on KPCC-FM (89.3), starting at 5 pm, with full coverage from NPR of the returns in the presidential race. Beginning at 8 pm, Larry Mantle and Kitty Felde will join the coverage, bringing the results of the important statewide and local races and initiative battles.

Courtney Love spins favorites on Friday nights

Courtney Love is coming to KDKD/KDLE-FM (103.1) for the remaining Friday nights of this month. She will be hosting a 2-hour show featuring her favorite music, both from her private collection and the station's archives. The show will air at 7pm Friday nights on Oct 15., Oct 22, and Oct 29th.

Final Presidential Debate Airs Tonight

KCRW-FM (89.9) airs the third and final 90 minute presidential debate tonight, from 6-7:30pm. Linda Wertheimer hosts the NPR coverage. Also broadcast on KFI (AM 640).
